Thanks to you, over last 12 months, popularity of www.steelguru.com has soared with average page views in November 2009 surging by 62% to 87,865 per day as compared to 54,329 per day in January 2009. With 23.437 million page views so far, we are on track to cross 25 million page views in 2009 and expect to cross 40 million page views in 2010.

During the year, in addition to reaching a level of almost 150 articles per day, we also added several features like On Line Poll, Interviews, Featured Articles, CSR Corner, Technology Tit Bits etc to keep you updated.

But most importantly, as we have to move in tandem with changing trends on internet, sharing of information by you with total ease became pivotal for us. We are referring to popular tools like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Digg, Google Bookmarks, Yahoo Bookmarks and many more.

Lastly, after remaining an electronic copy of a printed news letter on internet for so long, we want to give you better and brighter interface using flexibility offered by the electronic media.

All these factors galvanized us to redo the front end as well as back end, optimize our database, write smarter queries, use lighter but cleaner images, use high end servers and many more. The whole effort is to improve your surfing experience and provide you easy sharing options.

The new look SteelGuru.com is optimized for Internet Explorer version 7 & above and Firefox. Optimization for other browsers is being done and you may not be able to see proper version sometimes.

We sincerely hope that you like the new look… and find it fast and friendly

Your feedback and suggestions at research@steelguru.com would be highly appreciated as it would help us in fine tuning to further improve your experience at SteelGuru

With great sorrow, we inform our readers sad demise of a globally renowned metallurgist Dr R Balasubramanian, who succumbed to cancer at the age of 48 at Kanpur. Dr Bala leaves behind his wife Dr Gyatri Saini Balasubramanian and two daughters.

Dr Bala was a professor at the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. He completed B Tech in Metallurgy from IT BHU in 1984 with gold medal and later earned Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy NY in US in 1990.

Dr Bala was an avid musician also. His professional profile and achievements can be viewed at http://www.iitk.ac.in/mme/rbala/index.htm

Fondly known as Corrosion Guru, Dr Bala had unraveled the mystery of the 1,600 year old iron pillar of Kutub Minar, which has not corroded since it was built. To read the article “Looking into Past for Materials of Future” please visit

The global Steel industry has been through a turbulent phase since July 2008 with the spread of recessionary pandemic. The happenings have affected all quarters of the economy and industry.

The international prices movements has been devoid of certainty being dependant on transitory factors stock depletion and pruned production rather than demand. The prices have shown swings from the heights of USD 1220 per tonne in June 2008 to the depths of USD 280 per tonne March 2009 for billets FOB Black Sea Port. Subsequently market has rallied to attain semblance of stability as the stocks depleted and mills were operating at truncated capacity leading to demand resurrection in the short term.

These tumultuous happenings spurred us to launch a special package on our portal www.steelprices-global.com to aid operators . with a handy and incisive information from a cross section of vital markets viz., CIS (Black Sea Port) , China, Middle East and India for not only keeping a tab on market but take a commercially prudent decision.

Ferroalloys are a vital ingredient in the steel manufacturing being used as a means of introducing these alloying elements into the cast or as de-oxidizers.

As a corollary, ferroalloys market cannot remain unscathed with the happenings in the steel industry. The contemporary fickleness in the international steel market reeling under global recession has a marked impact on the prices of materials associated with it.

Some of the major Ferro Alloy producing countries viz., Chile, China, Peru, Mexico, Canada have been witnessing uncertain price movements. Although India being a minor player owing to a miniscule reserves and production has a major stake as a buyer with ever increasing steel capacities, massive infrastructure development entailing quantum jump in steel demand.

We at www.steelprices-india.com realized that any exercise in keeping a close tab on the steel industry would be grossly incomplete without including ferroalloys in its ambit as it is vital cost component. This will assist steel makers in evaluating their cost competitiveness regardless of the market condition to give the cutting edge.

Indian Steel prices have been through a tumultuous phase for over an year. The swinging fortune has a strong correlation with the raw material prices and vice versa. It is imperative for the steel producer, user or trader, however big or small to keep a tab on the raw material prices to have a holistic picture of the market.

We at www.steelprices-india.com endeavor to provide all encompassing prices of raw material from a cross section of domestic as well as international locations to give a realistic reflection of the market.

The movement in raw material prices has a bearing on the bottom line of the manufacturers who have become more cost sensitive amidst depleting margins. Buyers of long products primarily from the construction and power sector as well stockiest and traders have a keen interest in monitoring the prices of input materials to gauge the movements in long prices to hedging against future risks.

The scrap prices have been through an undulating movement in tandem with the turbulence in the steel industry since the onset of recession in July 2008.

The movements in scrap prices have correlation with the steel prices albeit at a slow pace. However with the persistent flux in the global steel market the relation has become more pronounced as steel manufacturers aim to minimize inventory to prune cost thereby accentuating fickleness.

Scrap prices demonstrated the characteristic waxing and waning with of amplified magnitude thereby affecting the bottom line of steel manufacturers in this turbulence. On the flip side the movements bear a correlation with the swinging fortunes in the steel market albeit not in the same proportion.

These erratic happenings in the steel scrap prices globally spurred us to launch a special package on our portal www.steelprices-global.com to aid furnace owners , scrap dealers etc by providing handy and incisive information from a cross section of vital markets viz India, Turkey, China & Europe enabling players to take a commercially prudent decision.
